Starting on 19 August 2025, all vehicles over 3.5 tonnes registered after June 2019 that carry out international transport within the European Union must be equipped with smart tachographs 2.0 (G2V2). The new rules had an immediate impact on the market: carriers across Europe faced disruptions and shrinking capacity.
The rules came into force right before the autumn transport peak. Many carriers delayed upgrading their tachographs until the last minute, and now the share of vehicles that meet the requirements is not keeping pace with the growing demand.
These rules are far from being a mere formality. EU member states have introduced heavy fines for non-compliance with smart tachograph requirements. Although the penalties are officially aimed at carriers, freight forwarders are experiencing knock-on effects in the form of missed deliveries and dissatisfied customers.
Trucks not equipped with G2V2 devices are not legally permitted to cross EU borders – a situation which has left thousands of vehicles across Europe unable to travel on international routes.
The requirements introduced in August are just the beginning. Starting in 2026, these rules will also apply to small vehicles between 2.5 and 3.5 tonnes used for international transport.
