Alphaliner reports despite the fact that the volume of new capacity introduced since the beginning of this year amounted to 1.14 million TEUs, the members of the three largest carrier alliances lack 36 ships to provide 25 services with a normal fleet for trade along the Asia-Europe corridor.
Based on the average vessel capacity of 14.15 thousand TEUs for this trade, the analyst estimates the capacity deficit of almost 510 thousand slots. This represents 9.6% of the total capacity required to provide weekly trade frequency on all services declared by the alliances along the Asia-Europe corridor.
The Red Sea crisis has led to the rerouting of 24 services to the Cape of Good Hope route. Another service – the service of CMA CGM, part of the Ocean Alliance, which connects Asia with eastern Mediterranean ports and Adriatic ports – has resumed operation on the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal route since the beginning of May.
