The European Commission subsidizes railway transportation

In May 2024, the European Commission published a five-year funding package worth 1.7 billion Euro for railway freight transportation. The new financing is intended to relieve the rail companies that carry out wagon railway transportation (EWV) from the high operating costs incurred as a result of complex picking and delivery processes through the transportation chain, and to ensure the competitiveness of railway freight transportation.

Wagon railway transportation means that individual shipments are picked up from industrial customers, assembled into long trains at marshalling yards, and disassembled and transported further at the destination point.

In addition to the European financing, the German Federal Government wants to subsidize this transport mode by approximately 290 million Euro this year. With this financing, a clear message is sent about the need to strengthen environmentally friendly railway transportation, says Volker Wissing, Federal Minister.
