In January–August 2024, the container transit traffic along the China – Europe – China route running through Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus totalled 296,200 TEU, 1.9 times more than a year earlier, according to UTLC ERA – a joint venture of the national rail companies of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Traffic from China to Europe totalled 255,600 TEU, 2.6 times more than a year earlier. However, consignments from Europe to China have decreased by 28.5% year-on-year to 40,700 TEU since the beginning of the year.
Despite the rapid growth in traffic relative to last year, transit is far behind the level of 2021, when more than 500,000 TEU of transit containers were transported along the China – Europe – China route in the same period.
