New Houthi warning to shipping in the Red Sea

Containerships carrying goods for 15 companies, including Boeing, have been listed as legitimate targets by Yemeni-based Houthi militia. Among the shipping lines believed to service Boeing are CMA CGM and Maersk, although spokespersons for the operators would not confirm this.

A Houthi spokesperson said that the fleet of these operators would be prohibited from transiting the Red Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. Their ships would be subject to targeting wherever reachable by the Yemeni armed forces.

Maersk vessels are currently diverted from the Red Sea anyway and the new announcement by the Houthis will have little or no effect on their plans. The France-based CMA CGM continued to use the Red Sea routes after the Arab-Israeli conflict escalated, as it was not engaged in shipping to Israel and was not a target of the Houthis. The situation is different for it now.

This means that the crisis in the Red Sea is dragging on, and hopes of resuming shipping through the Suez Canal after the bombing of the Houthis by U.S. forces have yet to materialise.
