Over the past two months, 10 high-tonnage container ships have transited through the Suez Canal. According to Maritime Executive, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) attributes the increase in the number of container ships passing through this waterway to the discounts introduced for such vessels in May, which were intended to last for three months.
As a reminder, in May, the Suez Canal Authority announced a 15% discount on transit fees for container ships with net tonnage of at least 130,000 tonnes. This discount applies to ships that are both loaded and in ballast.
Since May, six CMA CGM container ships and four MSC container ships have passed through the canal.
However, despite the incentives, other container lines are still avoiding this area.
According to Container News, the world’s biggest car carrier, which is owned by the Chinese car manufacturer BYD, passed through the Suez Canal on its maiden voyage in July.
