Global Demand for Container Shipping Is Weak, Yet the Rates Are Getting Higher

Container Trade Statistics (CTS) estimates that global container shipping demand in April 2022 is 14.3 million TEUs, which is 4% lower than in April 2021 and only 1.5% higher than the pre-pandemic level of April 2019.

The volume of container imports into Europe in April 2022 is 8% behind the levels of April 2021 and April 2019, and the growth of imports into North America is up to 1% slower over the same period.

Container exports from Asia decreased by 3% in April 2022 compared to a year earlier, but still remain 8% higher than the pre-pandemic level. Imports into Asia were 5% lower than in April 2021 and only 1.5% higher than in April 2019.

The Freight Rate Index recovered to 196 points in April after dropping to 192 in March.
