Global air cargo demand hits 14th consecutive month of growth

In September 2024, global civil aviation cargo traffic was up 9.4% year-on-year and international traffic was up 10.5%. It marked the 14th consecutive month of demand growth and an all-time record, the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) press office reports.

The Asia Pacific region, the largest segment of the global air cargo market, grew by 11.7% year-on-year, while in Europe the air cargo traffic grew by a similar percentage. North American airlines recorded the lowest growth rate.

The capacity for air cargo transport also increased in September, with supply on the market up 6.4% compared to September last year. IATA analysts point out that the growth is primarily driven by increased cargo capacity on passenger aircrafts, a trend that has been evident for 41 consecutive months. Meanwhile, available air freighter capacity was up 5.4% year-on-year in September 2024, but still below its peak in 2021.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh said that air transport yields were also up 11.7% on 2023 and 50% above 2019 levels.
