Germany’s federal government adopts a strategy for autonomous driving

On 4 December 2024, the federal government adopted a strategy for autonomous driving. In particular, it aims to pave the way for autonomous driving in regular operation and to enable further development of the technology. The goal of the federal government is to make Germany one of the world’s leading centres of innovation and manufacturing.

This decision makes Germany the first country in the world to establish a comprehensive legal framework for autonomous driving.

By 2028, the government aims to create the world’s largest connected operating area for unmanned vehicles, focusing on connecting suitable sections of the motorway network to cities and metropolitan areas. By 2030, autonomous driving should be an integral part of the intermodal and interconnected mobility system.
