On 22 September, strikes and manifestations were held in at least 75 Italian cities. Road transport in Italy faced severe disruptions due to nationwide strikes and blockades of key motorways and ports.
On 18 September, trade unions held a large-scale nationwide strike against the national budget reform. Transport services are among the sectors most affected by closures and blocking of central routes. The strike went beyond road transport: rail and air transport were also disrupted.
Austria’s transport sector says it’s ready to launch new protests, which will cause major disruptions to transport across the country. Despite the government scaling back the planned increase in truck tolls, business representatives are warning of substantial additional costs and threatening further protests unless the government introduces additional support measures. According to industry representatives, Austria is already among the countries with the highest toll rates for trucks in Europe. This is why the industry remains in opposition to the planned increase.
Given the general economic and political trends in the European Union, stabilisation of the situation and an end to the strikes are unlikely in the near future. Transport businesses should be ready to re-route quickly in situations where restrictions are likely.
