Container throughput in European ports still below pre-war levels

Container throughput in Rotterdam, Europe’s largest container port, has been consistently around 0.1 million TEUs higher than last year in each quarter of this year, although still below 2022 and well below 2021, the year before the loss of freight traffic due to trade sanctions against Russia.

The Port of Rotterdam reported container throughput of 10.4 million TEUs in the first nine months, up 2% year-on-year but more than 5% down on the first nine months of 2022.

In comparison, Antwerp’s container throughput has almost recovered to 2022 levels since the beginning of the year and is 7% above last year’s level.
