Combined transport in Europe gains support from governments

A recent survey carried out by the International Union for Road-Rail Combined Transport (UIRR) among its member companies shows that the performance of mixed (combined) transport fell by 0.79% in Q3 2024 year-on-year.

The UIRR cites a wave of rail line closures due to extreme weather conditions, such as heavy rain and flooding in Central Europe, Italy, Switzerland, and most recently in Spain, which have resulted in the loss of significant inter-modal capacity.

Given many uncertainties and expected disruptions, the UIRR Sentiment Index will remain ‘neutral’ for the next 12 months. However, new state aid programmes have been announced in France, Poland, and Spain to accelerate the development of inter-modal rail freight transport, combined transport, and transhipment terminals.
