Air Cargo Transportation: Demand Slows Down, But Keeps Growing

Global cargo turnover of civil aviation in January reached 21.47 billion ton-km, which is 3.2% more than in January 2024, according to information of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Demand for global air transportation has been increasing for 18 months in a row, however, the rate of increase has decelerated significantly: in January 2024, the rate of increase of air cargo traffic compared to the same level during the previous year was 18.4%. In December 2024 the demand increased by 6.1% compared to the same period during the previous year.

Inverse dynamics is observed regarding the offers of free capacity for air cargo transportation. In January this value grew by 6.8% compared to the last-year value, whereas in December the annual increase in cargo capacity was at 3.7%. On international lines the increase in available capacities in January grew even more – by 7.3% year-over-year.

By the end of 2024, the airlines in the Asia-Pacific Region showed the largest increase. In January 2025 the cargo capacity grew the fastest in Latin America (increase by 11.2%). Negative dynamics in January was registered in the Middle East and Africa.
