Germany records a sharp decline in truck traffic

According to the German Federal Logistics and Mobility Office (BALM), the mileage of trucks over 7.5 tons on the German toll road network decreased by significant 10.9% in March compared to the same month last year. German companies experienced a drop of 11.8%, while foreign trucks overall experienced a decline of 9.8%. In particular, the activity of Polish trucks, a major actor on the German roads, declined: in March 2024, their mileage decreased by 9.9%, compared to March 2023.

Over the first quarter of 2024, the total truck traffic in Germany decreased by 3.1%. The traffic of German trucks decreased by 3.8%, Polish trucks drove 1.9% fewer kilometers. However, it is worth noting that Polish trucks still account for a slightly higher share of total mileage for the period of January–March 2024 (19.3%), compared to the same period in 2023 (19.1%).

Lithuania broke the overall trend in the first quarter: their truck traffic on the German roads increased by 6.1%, and their market share also increased from 3.4% in the first three months of 2023 to 3.7% in the same period this year.
