Road Transportation Market from the EU to the CIS (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan) in January-March in 2015/16

The Russian Federation

Speaking about the volume of Russian exports to the countries of the EU, it increased significantly to France in March 2016 against the same period of the previous year (+412%, totaling 28,440 tons) and against February 2016 (+40%, totaling 10,048 tons). Besides, export to Italy is growing solidly: +39% (7,524 tons) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015, as well as +66% (10,590 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016. The dynamics of exports improved significantly from Russia to Poland: +53% in relative terms (28,306 tons in absolute terms).

In March 2016, imports increased from all the countries against the previous month. However, negative dynamics of imports was observed from the following countries against the same period in 2015: from Germany (-3%, totaling 5,125 tons), Spain (-4%, totaling 434 tons), Finland (-8%, totaling 8,162 tons), Austria (-10%, totaling 2,396 tons), Poland (-12%, totaling 13,128 tons), Latvia (-12%, totaling 2,149 tons), Estonia (-33%, totaling 5,133 tons).

Despite the fact that the volume of imports from the above-mentioned countries of the EU has not recovered, the general positive dynamics of imports in 2016 is evident. Imports from the Netherlands grew considerably with +22% (12,008 tons) in March 2016 against the same period of the previous year and +132% (37,639 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

The major goods exported from Russia in March 2016 were:

  • wood and paper products (46.5%, decreasing by 9.3%)
  • chemical products (17.6%, increasing by 2%)
  • fuel and energy products (14.2%, increasing by 10.9%)
  • metals and metalware (14.6%, decreasing by 2.6%)
  • products of animal and plant origin, as well as food (3.2%, decreasing by 0.7%)

The major goods imported to Russia in March 2016 were:

  • chemical products (31.1%, decreasing by 1.6%)
  • cars, equipment and vehicles (20.5%, increasing by 3.5%)
  • products of animal and plant origin, as well as ready-to-eat food (19.2%, decreasing by 1.3%)
  • wood and paper products (10.9%, decreasing by 1.1%)
  • metals and metalware (6.0%, decreasing by 0.6%)

Import and export of all product groups grew in March 2016 against February 2016.

Ukraine

Export of Ukraine revealed steady developing relations with Romania with the increase by 93% (totaling the greatest export growth by 10,426 tons) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and +9% (1,738 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

At the same time, exports to the Netherlands decreased by 82% (35,090 tons) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and; this tendency remained in March 2016 with -69% (18,043 tons) against February 2016.

Imports from the countries of the European Union grew steadily, especially from Poland (+20%, totaling 18,873 tons, in March against the same period in 2015; +9%, totaling 9,630 tons, in March 2016 against February 2016). Besides, imports increased steadily from France with +61% (4,275 tons) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and +28% (2,497 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

Negative dynamics of imports remained for Estonia with -2% in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and -15% in March 2016 against February 2016.

Since the beginning of the current year, export of the following product groups has been growing steadily:

  • wood and paper products (12.4% with the absolute growth by 26,906 tons)
  • metals and metalware (+6.4% with the growth by 2,948 tons in March)

Since the beginning of the year, there has been a decline in exports of products of animal and plant origin as well as food totaling -8.1% (6,403 tons) in March 2016.

Import of products of animal and plant origin as well as ready-to-eat food grew by 6.9% (46,439 tons) in March 2016, while February showed negative growth for the same product group.

The Republic of Belarus

Belarusian export (expressed in physical terms) grew steadily to Poland with +96% (29,121 tons) in March against the same period in 2015 and +18% (9,086 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016. Besides, exports to Bulgaria increased considerably with +255% (1,791 tons) against the previous year and +59% (921 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

Negative growth of exports was observed to Lithuania with -17% (4,224 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

Imports from Poland and Lithuania showed positive growth with +24% (9,568 tons) and +62% (7,796 tons) accordingly in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and 12% (5,258 tons) and +35% (5,271 tons) accordingly in March 2016 against February 2016.

Negative dynamics of imports in March 2016 against the same period of the previous year was observed from the following countries: Hungary (-11%, totaling 150 tons), Slovakia (-20%, totaling 347 tons), the Netherlands (-17%, totaling 446 tons), Italy (-19%, totaling 587 tons), the Czech Republic (-20%, totaling 589 tons), Latvia (-55%, totaling 1,906 tons) and Germany (-19%, totaling 3,117 tons).

The major goods exported from Belarus in February 2016 were:

  • wood and paper products (56.4% of the total volume of export, decreasing by 3.4%)
  • metals and metalware (14.6%, increasing by 1.9%)

The major goods imported to Belarus in March 2016 were:

  • chemical products (10.5%, decreasing by 0.1%)
  • products of animal and plant origin, as well as ready-to-eat food (70.9%, decreasing by 0.3%)
  • cars, equipment and vehicles (4.6%, decreasing by 0.1%)
  • metals and metalware (3.2%, increasing by 0.3%)

The Republic of Kazakhstan

In March 2016, exports to Poland grew by 59% (1,228 tons) against the same period in 2015 and increased by 6% (187 tons) against February 2016. Exports to Italy grew steadily: +165% (509 tons) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and +22% (149 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

In March 2016, the decrease of exports to Germany resulted in the negative dynamics with -38% (1,402 tons) against the same period in 2015; the same negative dynamics remained in 2016 with -14% (378 tons) in March against February.

Imports from the Netherlands grew steadily: +96% (2,058 tons) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015 and +78% (1,842 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

Despite the fact that imports from Germany decreased by 37% (3,991 tons) against the previous year, the volume of imports grew by 35% (1,800 tons) in March 2016 against February 2016.

The flowing tendency of exports was observed to Austria (-21%) and the Czech Republic (-28%) in March 2016 against the same period in 2015, the same dynamics remained in March 2016 against February 2016 with -21% to Austria and -14% to the Czech Republic.

The major goods exported from Kazakhstan in March 2016 were:

  • products of animal and plant origin, as well as ready-to-eat food (44.3% of the total volume of export, increasing by 3.3%)
  • metals and metalware (15.6%, decreasing by 0.2%)
  • textile fabrics and textile goods (12.8%, increasing by 2%)
  • chemical products (15.1%, decreasing by 3.3%)

The major goods imported to Kazakhstan in March 2016 were:

  • products of animal and plant origin, as well as ready-to-eat food (40.8%, decreasing by 2.5%)
  • cars, equipment and vehicles (17.2%, increasing by 0.5%)
  • chemical products (15.3%, increasing by 0.5%)
  • metals and metalware (10.4%, decreasing by 1.2%)

The dynamics of the volume of export (expressed in physical terms) was negative for all product groups.
